3pm Lyons Café: The Kobe Trio with Ciaran Wilde

kobe

Con Schmaucks, drums, Jaimie Carswell bass, Mark Murphy piano, Ciaran Wilde saxophone/clarinet.

The Kobe Trio, formed in late 2016, is a piano trio based in Sligo. They came together through a love of improvised music, performing a blend of original, contemporary and classic instrumental jazz with an adventurous and passionate interplay. The atmospheric harmonies are contrasted with interlaced rhythmic grooves and collective improvisations, combining the sounds scapes of Cinematic Orchestra with the syncopated rhythms of Phronesis and the jagged melodies of Thelonious Monk. The trio will be joined by very special guest Ciaran Wilde on saxophone.

Unforgettable: The Magic of Nat King Cole

vas

With SACHAL VASANDANI (USA) plus Liane Carroll, Sara Colman (UK) & the SJP International Band.

Vocalist Sachal Vasandani is one of the great singers of our time and the perfect man for a Nat “King” Cole centennial celebration. Sligo Jazz Project is honoured to be the first European festival to host this show since its debut at the Lincoln Centre last December with John Clayton and Wynton Marsalis’s band. Sachal will be bringing famed US arranger John Clayton’s Lincoln Centre arrangements direct from New York, along with soloists including Jazz FM instrumentalist of the year, saxophonist Jean Toussaint, Paul Booth, trumpeter Ryan Quigley and trombone ace Shannon Barnett as well as a member of last December’s Lincoln Centre orchestra, Corkman Paul Dunlea, also on trombone.
A distinctive, groundbreaking artist in his own right, Vasandani’s “beautiful, velvety voice and remarkable stage presence” (NPR) nonetheless draw comparisons to Nat “King” Cole himself. Vasandani is particularly well known for his Cole tribute project, which has featured classics like “Unforgettable,” “When I Fall in Love,” and “Straighten Up and Fly Right.” Tonight’s concert also features songs from SJP’s other two amazing 2019 vocalists, Sara Colman and Liane Carroll.
