MATTHEW HALPIN QUARTET

Matthew Halpin - saxophone

Karl Henrik Ousback - drums

James Little - bass

Scott Kohlmann - guitar

No stranger to Sligo although just eighteen years old, saxophonist Matthew Halpin is seen as an exciting prospect in Irish jazz.

Matthew has been attending Sligo Jazz Project events for a few years now and starred at many SJP jam sessions while still in his mid-teens. Matthew last year made his official SJP performance debut guesting with the RISE Saxophone Quartet at the opening of Sligo Jazz 08 at the Factory.

All of this new quartet are SJP "graduates", so to speak, having attended our summer school, and we are delighted to welcome them back with open arms as performers.

A classically trained jazz musician, Matthew Halpin has performed alongside many highly aclaimed players. He has also studied with Billy Harper, Branford Marsalis, Jamie Oehlers among many others. Matthew's collaberations range vaguely from small to larger groups, recently including the RTE National Concert Orchestra. He has been awarded scholarships for the past five years to the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. He has most recently been offered a full scholarship to study a BA in jazz performance in Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts.

Karl Henrik Ousback is without a doubt one of the most prodigious young talents Sligo has ever seen. Karl duetted with guitar legend, fellow Swede Ulf Wakenius, at last year's SJP main event and this will be his third year at Sligo's jazz festival, his first as a full blown performer. And he's still just 16.

James Little is a Prague-based Irish electric bassist. He has studied under Brendan Sheeran, Dave Redmond, Ronan Guilfoyle, and Anthony Vitty & Reggie Washington at the 2008 Sligo Jazz Project. From 2004-2006 he was a student at Newpark Music Centre, as part of their full-time jazz course. In 2005 James received a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music summer performance program. James works with Lauren Kinsella and Simon Roth in the Weide Trio, a group which focuses on original compositions. He has toured Ireland and Holland. He has also appeared on RTE television with singer Gavin Ryan. In 2008 James received his LGSMD from Trinity College, London.

Scott Kohlmann is a Dublin-based guitarist who studied jazz at Newpark Music Centre and also attended SJP summer schools.
